YOUTH CONFERENCE |
The DWICA annual youth conference was established on 29 November 1997 with our first youth worker, Margaret Brown. The conference was open by Des Coleman, who was then a young actor on the popular BBC programme EastEnders. The youth conference was set up as a forum to address the underachievements of youths and to give them an opportunity to meet with educational providers and debate and discuss issues that affect them.
Over the years the youth conference has covered issues that affect our young people from education, health, homelessness, unemployment, skills development to work on active citizenship. It is a forum for young people to debate and discuss issues that affect them. Young people have always been actively involved in its planning and organising but 2003 saw an even great involvement, especially from the young people in Trinity group. This is something that we welcome and will continue to encourage.
We have also saw a greater involvement from service providers such as Derby City Council’s Youth Service, the Connexion Service, Derbyshire LSC, the Princes Trust, Arboretum Neighbourhood Board, Derbyshire Police Relentless fund and Derby Community Safety Partnership: Stronger Communities. In 2005 the Annual Youth Conference took on a national focus and we had over 200 young people from across the country gathered at the Centre for the event, facilitated by some outstanding black professionals. The conference in 2015 will be held on Saturday 21st November 2015 and planning/ preparation will begin in earnest in June/July 2015. For further information please contact the DWICA. |
